Bigger isn’t always better – unless you’re standing inside Ray and Gail Threlkeld’s 5,053 square foot home in the middle of 10 acres of Leesburg, Virginia land. Before going big, the Threlkelds had set their sights on something a bit smaller. In fact, it was a timber frame bank barn built by Vintage Homes and Millwork’s parent company, B&D Builders, that first caught their eye.
“We were very impressed with the quality of their work and really liked the timber frame construction.”
One conversation led to another and the plan to build a bank barn style vacation getaway quickly evolved. Soon, the Threlkelds were in the throes of designing their custom-built dream home and planning a move from North Carolina. Over the next six months, B&D Builders and architect, Mark Meyers, worked closely with Gail to make sure the Threlkeld’s vision made its way to paper and then the 3D designs. With the plans in place, it was time to build.
“Gail has a degree in construction management and a good eye for design. The team worked with us very well in incorporating her design vision into our home,” comments Ray.
Driving up the long circular driveway, it’s the covered timber frame portico that draws you in and makes you feel welcome. Inside, the home features dramatic hardwood vaulted ceilings, large windows, tile, and extensive use of natural stone and Douglas Fir. A massive stone fireplace creates a focal point in the great room, which features clerestory windows and built-in shelving.
“Gail and I spend a lot of time in our back pavilion. It’s definitely our favorite part of the house.”
Behind the grand home is the Threlkeld’s sanctuary. The secluded outdoor living area incorporates cathedral ceilings with a ceiling fan and a stunning stone fireplace. As an added feature, the outdoor living areas include expansive stone terraces and rolling manicured lawns.
“B&D’s workmanship and how they design wood beam construction is fantastic. It’s truly a work of art. How they deal with wood, doors, archways, laminated wood beams, and rock work is all very good,” describes Ray.
With B&D’s level of expertise and skilled craftsmanship, Gail and Ray were able to design and customize every detail of their home. Every aspect and concept was perfectly engineered to create the peaceful, welcoming, timber-framed home that the Threlkelds had hoped for. The stunning and quality craftsmanship of the Threlkeld residence is what you can expect from the team of experts at B&D Builders, keeping in line with the motto “We built it right, or we don’t build it.”
