Selecting the Perfect Wood Species & Stain Color

Vintage Millwork and Restoration’s custom wood doors are the perfect blend of beauty and strength. We enjoy working with a variety of woods, each with its own warm texture and unique character. With its timeless charm, wood is the top choice for a sophisticated, distinctive look.

To ensure your door will stand against the elements and daily use, a Vintage Millwork and Restoration engineer will walk you through selecting the appropriate wood species, width, and weight for your door’s intended style and use. All of our lumber is quarter sawn for strength and kiln dried for durability. We will also discuss enriching the door’s color with complementary stains and seal the wood with a protective finish.

Choosing Your Wood Species

Wood doors carry a timeless charm and unique beauty. We offer some of the best options for your custom door.

Most Popular Choices

  • Sapele Mahogany
  • Western Red Cedar
  • Douglas Fir
  • Reclaimed Hemlock
  • Reclaimed White Oak

Additional Varieties

  • Knotty Alder
  • Boral
  • White Pine
  • White Oak
  • Spanish Cedar

Reclaimed Wood

Vintage Millwork and Restoration is also experienced in building custom doors from reclaimed wood, as well as adding reclaimed hand hewn beams to entryways. Using reclaimed wood provides a unique, aged look while giving old wood pieces a new life.

Engineered Design for Durability

Our doors are engineered for added strength. We layer quarter-inch pieces of wood, strategically positioned with the grains running in different directions to form the core of your door. This technique minimizes points of weakness or the potential for warping. You can elect to have the same type of wood layered, or blend different wood species for the core and the exterior. The result is a solid, durable, beautiful wood door that will last and provide better thermal insulation.

Variety of Stains and Finishes

We only offer the highest quality stains and finishes for our doors. The deep-penetrating stain enhances the color of your door, while your finish provides some protection against the elements. We offer a flat finish to allow the natural beauty of the wood door to be the focus.

Your custom door can be stained with a variety of colors to complement your wood choice and color preference. While we can stain your door any color, the following are among the most popular choices:

  • Medium Brown with Clear
  • Puritans Pine
  • Red
  • White
  • Clear
  • Early American
  • English Chestnut

Exact stain color varies based on wood species. Ask about our custom stains and finishes.
